Grant Description
Fellowships of up to $25,000 and fellowships of $60,000 to USA, Canada, and International doctoral candidates and post-doctoral scholars for research related to East Asian studies. Funding is intended to support research in the history of technology and science in modern East Asia, primarily from the twentieth century onward. Other eligible focus areas include comparative studies of East Asia and the West as well as studies in related fields (mathematics, medicine, and public health).
Post-doctoral Fellowships will be awarded annually to a distinguished young scholar who has received his/her doctoral degree within the previous five years.
Dissertation Fellowships will be awarded annually to Ph.D. candidates who intend to finish their dissertations within a year or two.

Additional Criteria for Eligibility
The Foundation provides fellowships and grants to support graduate students and young scholars who are working in the history of science and technology in modern East Asia, regardless of their nationality, origins, or gender. Fellowships and grants are not limited to students studying at US universities; students at non-US universities are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Post-doctoral Fellowship: Fellowships will be awarded annually to a distinguished young scholar who has received his/her doctoral degree within the previous five years. Applicants should include an invitation letter from their host institution. Applicants are encouraged to select different institutions from their alma mater or previously related ones as their hosts.
- Dissertation Fellowship: Fellowships will be awarded annually to Ph.D. candidates who intend to finish their dissertations within a year or two.
Pre-Application Information
The deadline for fellowship applications is December 1, 2022. Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail in early February.
English is the official language of the Foundation. All application materials (including sample chapters, papers, and essays) should be written in English. All publications, workshops, and meetings that the Foundation support use English only.
- Two letters of recommendation must be directly sent to the Foundation by e-mail.
- For applicants of the Postdoctoral Fellowship, an additional letter of invitation from the host institution is required. The host institution cannot be changed without permission from the Foundation.
- Dissertation Fellowship applicants should include two (fairly complete, not rough) draft chapters with their application.
If a recipient receives another grant, he/she must report it to the foundation.
