Grants of up to $2,000 to USA and Territories nonprofit theaters, and fellowships of up to $2,000 to individual artists to benefit youth and children's theater. Fellowships are intended to provide growth opportunities for artists who work in youth theater. Priority consideration will be given to applicants not funded by a Children's Theatre Foundation (CTFA) grant during the previous two years.

Theater or Collaboration Grants: 

Theater or Collaboration Grants will be evaluated on their impact in their local community demonstrating their ability to:

  • Promote theater and bring the live theater experience to children
  • Impact their environment
  • Impact their specific communities
  • Applications will also be evaluated in light of CTFA’s Mission and Values. 

Eligible expenses include people engaged in a new initiative or a new original play for children and youth; equipment to enhance quality of your company; and travel. 

Individual Artist Fellowships:

Fellowship applicants ​will be evaluated on their specific development plan demonstrating the following:

  • Impact on personal artistic growth
  • Developed and increased awareness of and/or demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Increased career marketability, stability, visibility and/or new opportunity for their work
  • Applications will also be evaluated in light of CTFA’s Mission and Values.

Eligible expenses include a development plan designed to build personal growth in theatre artistry, expand impact and awareness of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and develop increased career marketability. For Craft examples, see URL for Full Text below.

 The grants and fellowships are intended to support the mission and values of the Children’s Theatre Foundation.

  • The mission of the Children’s Theatre Foundation is to challenge and support theater artists to achieve excellence in service to young people.
  • The Foundation values: children and youth, the art of theater, equity, diversity and inclusion, and excellence and innovation.
  • CTFA committed to dismantling institutional and structural racism in the field of theater for young audiences and will give preference to applicants who demonstrate their work toward this goal -- either generally, or through the proposed project. Aurand Harris Grants & Fellowships Proposed Project should begin no earlier than September 1, 2020 and should be completed no later than July 15, 2021 (Some exceptions may be granted.).

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications are only accepted from theaters that are 501c3 IRS certified Not-for-profits working in the USA. This includes USA territories.

Theater and Collaboration Grant Applications​:
Who May Apply:
- 501c3 IRS certified nonprofit theaters in the USA, established for at least 3 year consecutive years, possessing a public record of artistic quality and with an annual operating budget of under a million dollars A collaboration of a theater artist and a small or mid-sized 501c3 IRS certified nonprofit theater in the USA.
- Applicant theaters may apply under the umbrella of another organization’s 501c3 IRS certified nonprofit status if that organization is partnering in the proposed project. Large theaters should consult CTFA’s Founders Grant Guidelines.

Not Eligible for Funding:
- General operating support such as support for the regular and ordinary projects that are part of the on-going work or season of the applicant
- Projects that are already underway
- Free performances or ticket subsidies
- Activities undertaken for academic credit
- Projects proposed by theaters that do not have a one-to-one cash match •In-kind salaries and services may be counted if they are earmarked for this specific project
- Large theaters with budgets above one million dollars.

Fellowship Applications​:
Who May Apply:
- An early or mid career individual professional theater artist, working in theater for young audiences in the USA. An artist does not have to be connected to a theater to apply. This can include playwrights, scenic designers, costume designers, lighting designers, directors and/or teachers.

Not Eligible for Funding:
- Projects that are already underway
- Activities undertaken for academic credit
- Regular productions, teaching, writing or design work that are part of the typical projects, on-going work or season of the applicant artist
- Any proposals that do not make a case for all 3 of the fellowship personal growth criteria listed above.

Pre-Application Information:

To be eligible for consideration, this application must include all of the information requested in the application form and must be received by March 2, 2020, midnight, Pacific Coast standard Time Zone.
