Opportunity for New York City dance artists to participate in a residency program in upstate New York during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Residencies are intended to provide dancers and choreographers with space that supports the development of their work and encourages creativity. Residents stay at the Petronio Residency Center (PRC) in Greene County’s Catskill Mountains for a one-week period.

PRC is thrilled to announce the expansion of its acclaimed Retreat and Restore residency program. Created in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, PRC is now announcing two additional residency weeks in March 2022. Awarded artists and up to five other collaborators will receive a one-week-long residency at Petronio Residency Center in Round Top, N.Y.

Since 2018, Petronio Residency Center has addressed the shifting field of American dance by offering on-site creative residencies nestled within a 175-acre haven perched in Greene County’s Catskill Mountains. Residencies allow artists time for creation, discussion, and critical thinking, free from the mandates and responsibilities of daily life and any specific deliverables. In the time of COVID, PRC has significantly increased this commitment by adding two additional residencies and opening its application process. PRC recognizes that many dance artists are dangerously under resourced and it is hoped that this restorative and creative time can assist them to weather a most challenging period.

Residencies in the Age of COVID

In June 2020 SPC/PRC began to welcome dancers and choreographers back to the residency center under strict guidelines that consider the health and well-being of the residents, staff and the community. Currently PRC is hosting limited retreats/residencies that require quarantining and testing prior to arrival, temperatures and a symptom check in daily and limitations on residents leaving the center and anyone else entering. Meals are provided by PRC and prepared and eaten on site, cleaning of the studio and house is daily and extensive. All residents have their own bedrooms and bathrooms, except for couples who have been sheltering together. PRC is grateful to be open, to be welcoming, even on a limited basis, members of the performance community and look forward to a time when this can be done more extensively.
