Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $5,000 to USA and territories artists in eligible disciplines for urgent physical and mental health care needs. Funding is intended to prevent the delay of important medical treatment and to mitigate the financial impact of unexpected health emergencies. Grant funds may be used to cover expenses such as hospital and doctor bills (including insurance co-pays), tests, physical/occupational therapy, prescription drugs specifically for the emergency medical condition, and emergency dental work. Eligible applicants include visual and media artists and choreographers. Artists of color, artists with disabilities, and those living outside of the East and West coasts are encouraged to apply.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The program provides one-time grants of up to $5,000 for unexpected medical emergencies.

Term of Contract:

Period covered: expenses from six months prior to the application opening date and/or projected six months after the application closing date.

For medical emergencies occurring between March 1, 2020 and later, apply for the October 2020 deadline.

Cycle 5 application: for emergency treatment between May 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must to be 21 years or older at the time each cycle closes.
- Open to visual and media artists and choreographers.
- Open to artists who reside in the United States, District of Columbia, or U.S. Territories.
- Open to artists whose adjusted gross annual income is $75,000 or lower for an individual, or $150,000 for joint filers, averaged over the last two federal tax returns.
- The emergency must have occurred March 1, 2020 or later.
- All eligible medical emergencies or treatment needs to occur in the U.S.
- Applicants must demonstrate current and ongoing activity in artistic discipline/s.
- Applicants cannot be enrolled in any degree-seeking program.

Television producers, television/film performers, and crew members, dance performers, et al are not eligible. Visual and media arts which are intended for commercial or mass production, or are work-for-hire projects, are not eligible.

Please note: Rauschenberg Medical Emergency Grants are not for lost wages.

Grants cannot be used to cover expenses for non-emergency medical conditions, ongoing psychiatric treatment, wellness visits, regular dental check-ups or procedures, eyeglasses or standard vision care, elective surgery, non-medical expenses resulting from financial hardship, purchase of materials, loan repayment, purchase of insurance/premiums, and loss of property, even if the result of an emergency.

Grants cannot be requested for treatment, prescriptions, or other expenses related to a chronic condition. Extenuating circumstances that cause an unexpected and severe worsening of the condition may be considered at the discretion of the panel.

Timeline:
- For medical emergencies occurring between March 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021: Application Opens: Monday, September 28, 2020 at 11:00 AM, Applications Close: Monday, October 26, 2020 at 11:59 PM
- Cycle 5 application opens December 2, 2020; the deadline is January 6, 2021, for emergency treatment between May 1, 2020 and April 30, 2021.

Funds go directly to the artist, not a medical provider, vendor, or any individual on the grantee’s behalf. Grant awards are routinely paid electronically.

The application review process will take place within a 3 to 4 week period after applications close and all applicants will be notified of the outcome soon after. Payment processing can take a minimum of 15 business days after all paperwork is submitted. These processing times are subject to change.
