Deadline Date:

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $20,000 to New York nonprofit grassroots organizations to support operations and build capacity. Funding is also intended to support programs of current grant recipients. Eligible organizations should focus on strengthening communities and promoting leadership skills, and must operate in at least one of the five boroughs of New York City, or in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia, Greene, Delaware, Rensselaer, Albany and Schoharie counties.

The Foundation looks for five things to confirm that an organization is building "people power":

  • The organization is led by the people directly impacted by the issues the organization works on, and those members have clear decision-making power
  • Brings people together and develops the leadership skills of the people they work with
  • Can identify and works to address the root causes of the problems, not just the symptoms
  • Creates systemic change through campaigns, a planned series of events or activities that alter unjust power relationships
  • Has a strong vision for social justice and is committed to working towards a larger movement

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grant Amounts: $10,000, $15,000, or $20,000

The Community Funding Committee determines how much to award based on the organization’s alignment with their criteria and priorities. There is no need to apply for a specific amount when you submit your application.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The organization must have 501(c)(3) charitable status or a fiscal sponsor with 501(c)(3) status. Organizations that do not yet have 501(c)(3) status or a fiscal sponsor may apply, but must secure a fiscal sponsor before receiving a grant.

Eligible organizations must operate in at least one of the five boroughs of New York City, or in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia, Greene, Delaware, Rensselaer, Albany and Schoharie counties. Grantees must be located either in NYC or within at least one of these counties, but do not need to work in all the listed locations. Local chapters of statewide or national organizations may apply.

Special consideration will be given to organizations that:
- Have less access to foundation funders, capacity building or training opportunities
- Lack “back office” administrative and/or fundraising support from a host organization or fiscal sponsor
- Are less than six years old.

In addition to the criteria listed above, North Star Fund will consider applications from organizations that meet all of the following requirements:
1. Annual budget that falls under $800,000. This may include:
- Organizations that have an annual budget under $800,000
- Organizing projects of larger entities, such as direct services or legal services providers, that have an annual budget under $800,000, or
- Hybrid community organizing and direct service organizations whose organizing expenses falls under $800,000
2. Building community power in at least one of the five boroughs of New York City.
3. North Star Fund will consider renewal applications from:
- Organizations that received a Catalyst or Grassroots Action Grant in Spring 2019;
- Organizations that received a grant in Fall 2018 with an 18-month grant term; or
- Past grantees returning after a one-year break, provided that they have secured funding sources in addition to North Star Fund.

For additional eligibility criteria, see: https://northstarfund.org/apply/criteria/

Ineligible Organizations:
- Direct service organizations, i.e. food pantries, soup kitchens
- Grants to individuals, i.e. fellowships
- Private or public schools, colleges, and universities
- Hospitals and clinics
- International organizations
- Travel expenses for individual speakers or conference participants
- Activities to elect specific candidates for public office
- Fundraising events such as galas and walk-a-thons
- Feasibility studies, capital fund drives
- Organizations that do not comply with federal, state, or local equal opportunity statutes

North Star Fund welcomes applications from current grantees for up to six continuous years. After six years, grantees should take a one-year break before re-applying. Grantees are eligible to re-apply after this one-year break provided that they have secured funding sources in addition to North Star Fund’s support.
