Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation - James C. Kapteyn Endowment Fund
02/09/19 - Nomination deadline
Awards totaling up to $10,000 to Massachusetts, Connecticut, or New York private and public high school teachers in eligible areas for excellence in teaching and for serving as a formal or informal mentor to students. Eligible regions include the Northwest corner of Litchfield County, Connecticut, northeast Dutchess and Columbia counties in New York, and southern Berkshire County and Franklin County, Massachusetts.
The candidate should meet the vision of the Fund and fulfill the following criteria:
- Exhibits exemplary character, integrity, honor, and leadership
- Stimulates and encourages early intellectual, athletic, artistic and/or other mature interests in their students
- Teaches the "whole child"
The overarching priority of the Kapteyn Prize is to recognize “whole child teachers” who serve in multiple capacities within a school community. The concept of a “whole child teacher” builds from the so-called “triple threat” faculty model of traditional boarding schools in which classroom teachers from across the disciplines also serve as, for example, coaches, dorm parents, advisors, tutors and administrators, including people who work with students in the visual and performing arts and other special study programs. “Whole child teachers” mentor their students in several different school contexts, formal and informal, thus engendering deep, trusting bonds that enhance their ability to reach and guide the young adults with whom they work.
Winners are expected to use the money to enrich themselves as individuals and thereby as teachers, to stimulate and nourish their own intellects and sensibilities through new experiences, for example, study or travel. By feeding their own souls, winners will bring fresh inspiration and insight to their students and colleagues.
