Hands Across Decatur
Hands Across Decatur is an all-volunteer program located in a stand-alone facility (brick & mortar) building with the sole purpose of providing emergency services, a warming or cooling center when needed with nobody being turned away. This is a safe, well-lit facility that is climate controlled both safe for the unhoused adults and children. This is not a shelter but rather, a resource center with hot meals provided up to two times per day and to-go lunch system in place, using food pantry items and lunches funded by volunteers – as supplies are available. At this facility, both adults and children may receive appropriate clothing based on weather conditions, access to personal hygiene items, sleeping bags, tents and has a shower facility. - Programs or services
- We advocate and empathize for our homeless and those at risk of being homeless on their path forward. We believe no one gets housed alone, and no one should face homelessness without support. At its core, homelessness is not a housing problem – it is a people problem that requires compassion, connection to resources, and support. Many of these issues involve children and HAD goes beyond the absence of housing, to help the unhoused singles, families and children of this subset of issues by helping to provide stability for the children. It is not enough to solve a temporary crisis. Connecting people with the right resources can help resolve long-term challenges. Solving it means preparing individuals with the tools, support, and relationships they need to build lasting stability. Every person and child deserve a stable environment. We support individuals, families with children on the edge of homelessness by creating space for joy, growth, and stability. We believe that education in real life situations can break the cycle of poverty. In 2025 HAD served 12,498 hot meals and provided 7,237 to go meals.
The number of people seeking clean clothing, support groups, sleeping bags, tents, hygiene items and emergency food bags, assistance with ID’s and counseling was 13,882.
There were 445 individuals receiving monthly medical care by a volunteer physician 445
An all -volunteer workforce providing 25,394 hours.
Occasional hotel stays: To offer critical, temporary shelter families in crisis, and unsafe/unstable conditions - in urgent situations. Hands Across Decatur (HAD) provides occasional, short-term hotel stays to families experiencing housing instability. This support serves as a critical bridge when no other safe or appropriate housing options are immediately available. Provide transportation to and from medical appointments; unhoused have no transportation available and 100 percent dependent on volunteers. - Target Audience
- Measurable outcomes involve tracking counts of unsheltered individuals and monitoring our own data each year. Men, Women, African American, Hispanic, and other data. Using HAD’s Continuums of Care methods and theory, help to track date and managing data during peek winter and summer months, especially. HAD provided 24/7 shelter the entire month of December 2025 and January 2026 due to severe weather. Our data provides evidence of families, with children utilizing the facility in an emergency shelter situation. Continuums of Care also conduct a count of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness every other year. Each count is planned and coordinated and carried out locally on a specified night in January. We advocate and empathize for our homeless and those at risk of being homeless on their path forward.
