Grant Description

Grants to USA, Canada, and International research groups for costs to facilitate research. Funding is intended for research that falls into one of the following categories: nature conservation, sustainable economic development, and human well-being. Funds may be used to convene working groups and support the salaries of postdoctoral fellows and technical researchers.

The Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAPP) provides funds to convene working groups and, in some cases, to support salaries of postdoctoral fellows/associates (hereafter postdocs) or technical researchers committed to specific aspects of the project. If support for a postdoc is requested, then additional scrutiny will be applied to the proposal to evaluate how well it also delivers on professional development goals of the SNAPP postdoc.

As described by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) a postdoc is a “training-focused position available to people who have earned a doctorate. Postdoc positions usually act as a stepping-stone between the student experience and the full-time professional experience. For the postdoc appointee, a postdoc position offers in-depth training. For the postdoc institution or organization, a postdoc is a dedicated researcher, with specialized knowledge but flexible to explore other topics.” Any SNAPP working group who seeks to hire a postdoc takes on certain mentoring and administrative responsibilities when doing so.

Additional Criteria for Eligibility

Working group composition
- A transdisciplinary team of 12-15 individuals from a broad suite of sectors, institutions, and specialties who would not otherwise convene around a science and conservation challenge. Scientists, practitioners, other experts, and (in some cases) stakeholders will work together from the beginning to design the project and co-produce its products andoutcomes.
- Effective working groups typically include members that play different roles, including subject matter experts from a range of natural and social sciences, as well as strategy or application experts who can facilitate the translation and integration of knowledge across disciplines (with the end user always in mind). To ensure decision-relevance, groups may include policymakers or stakeholder representatives, or engage an advisory committee.
- Working group members from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and/or The Nature Conservancy are highly recommended, as are representatives from other conservation and sustainable development non-governmental organizations (and similar organizations or government agencies).
- Contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures.

Funding restrictions are as follows:
- Under no circumstances may SNAPP funds be used to pay salaries of PrincipalInvestigators, nor can these funds be used to pay for routine working group meeting attendance by PIs.No overheads may be charged to SNAPP funds.
- Funds may be used to pay for analysis conducted by an outside contractor, or even a specific analysis conducted by a working group member (who is not a PI) where it is above and beyond the engagement of most working group members and not otherwise part of this person’s job. Funds may also cover postdoctoral researchers, research assistants, facilitators, graphic designers, and other independent contractors on a case-by-case basis.
- The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is the fiscal agent for SNAPP and will execute all contracts unless otherwise approved in advance and in writing; therefore, standard TNCconstraints on conflicts of interest apply.

Pre-Application Information

The SNAPP review process is two-tiered.
Round 1: Successful submission of a complete and accurate proposal. Proposals to SNAPP are accepted beginning in September and are due no later than 11:59 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time on 15 December 2022.

Round 2: Proposals that most strongly align with SNAPP’s mission and priorities will advance to Round 2 for rigorous scientific review and vetting of their plan to implement long-term, tangible changes for nature conservation and human well-being. Applicants will be notified of final decisions of which Proposals will be funded byMay 2023.
