Grants and scholarships to New York nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, and individuals for programs that benefit women and girls in eligible regions. Focus areas for grants include health and education. Scholarships are intended to support education for women. Eligible organizations must be located in and serving the citizens of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties. Individual applicants should be females that live in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties.

The mission of the Fund for Women of the Southern Tier is to help girls and women achieve economic self-sufficiency and realize life goals. The targeted focus for the 2020 grantmaking year of the Fund for Women of the Southern Tier will be for programs/projects that support the education and/or health of girls and women. 

Available Grants and Scholarships:

  • Non-Profits: The targeted focus of the 2020 grantmaking year of the Fund for Women of the Southern Tier is on programs/projects that support the education and/or health of women and girls. See Supporting Documents below for full nonprofit grant guidelines. 
  • Grants for Individuals:  These grants are to be used to remove any barrier to the pursuit of their educational endeavors. Examples may include paying for college textbooks, technical supplies, assistance with past due tuition bills, fees for professional licensing exams, etc. Award criteria includes a demonstrated financial need. See Supporting Documents below for full grant guidelines. 
  • Scholarships for Individuals: All scholarships are based on demonstrated financial need.  See Supporting Documents below for full scholarship guidelines. Preference will be given to girls and women who fall into one or more of the following categories:
    • First generation college students
    • Non-traditional student/Adult Learners - 25 years or older
    • Women who seek a diploma certification for high demand job functions in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and/or Yates counties at a technical school, college or university
    • Girls and women who have overcome a significant challenge in their lives

Number of Grants:

The Fund for Women of the Southern Tier, Inc. will award up to ten grants to girls and women. The Fund for Women of the Southern Tier, Inc. will award up to four educational scholarships.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- The Fund for Women of the Southern Tier, Inc. will award $500 grants to girls and women.
- The Fund for Women of the Southern Tier, Inc. will award $2,500 educational scholarships.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Fund for Women of the Southern Tier accepts application from individuals and registered 501c3 organizations.

Non-profits:
- Applicants must be registered 501(c)(3) organizations located in and serving the citizens of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and/or Yates counties. The fund will make grant awards within the same geographic areas as the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties of New York.
- Proposals from faith-based organizations will be considered if: (1) service benefits all, regardless of religion; (2) service provided is not religious in nature; and (3) there is no proselytizing associated with the service.

Individuals: Applicants must live and/or work in the greater Southern Tier region. The fund will make grant awards within the same geographic area as the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc., Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties of New York.

The Fund for Women generally does not make grants for the following:
- Annual campaigns, special event fundraisers or sponsorships
- Religious purposes
- Political or partisan purposes
- Activities taking place before grant decisions are made
- Trips for schools or clubs
- Deficit funding or debt retirement
