Request a Grant Writer

Award of $6,000 to a USA K-12 teacher to recognize exceptional leadership in geoscience education. Teachers that are eligible for nomination should have full-time teaching experience for at least three years and be currently teaching about natural resources for at least one unit per year. Teachers who include subjects relevant to energy resource development will receive special consideration.

In concert with the 1996 National Science Education Standards, a teacher’s use of the inquiry approach in teaching will be given extra consideration. The winner will also receive an expense paid trip for two to ACE to receive the award.

Honorable mentions will each receive a $500 cash award.

Teacher's philosophy should include any of the following:
- Scientific study of resources
- Origin
- Discovery
- Extraction
- Historic use and present use
- Conservation
- Preservation of the environment
- Use of earth science knowledge in informed decision making

Unit will be evaluated on:
- Petroleum and industry concepts
- Creativity of presentation
- Balanced treatment of information regarding societal need and environmental issues
- Clarity and accuracy of expression
- Overall excellence in teaching

Honorable mentions will each receive a $500 cash award.

The final TOTY winner will receive a $6,000 award which will be presented to the individual at the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE). The award includes $3,000 for school use under the teacher's supervision for educational purposes and $3,000 for personal use by the teacher. The winner will also receive an expense paid trip for two to ACE to receive the award.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible Nominees:
- Three years full-time teaching experience and currently teaches at a U.S. K-12 school
- Teaches one unit per year on natural resources
- Unit fits definition of natural resources

Pre-Application Information:

Application deadline is February 1, 2019.

- Letter of recommendation from colleague
- Letter of recommendation from administrator

Applications must include a brief summary of how the school will use the award. The application should consist of material taught during the academic year ending the previous Spring or Summer semester.
