Grants of up to $15,000 to New York nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in eligible regions for the presentation and production of cultural programming. First-time applicants must participate a workshop prior to applying. Funding is intended for quality arts programs, projects, and services that benefit the residents of Sullivan County. Programs should focus on visual, performing, literary, media or folk arts; local and ethnic culture; history and heritage; architecture or environmental arts; and multimedia or multi-disciplinary projects.

Priority is given to groups that: 

  • Support artists
  • Are dedicated to long-term, year-round cultural development in Sullivan County
  • Reach underserved regional and population sectors, and/or broad-based audiences 
  • Promote new and original programming.

The goals of Arts for Sullivan are to: 

  • Support artists in the creation of new work, and enhance artistic visibility and impact;
  • Support non-profit cultural groups in providing culturally diverse, year-round, quality programming in all areas of the county;
  • Support quality programming that enhances underserved constituents and regions of the county 
  • Promote communication and understanding between the different facets of the Sullivan County community through arts and culture, and educate community leaders on the grant process and resources available; and
  • Support the arts that encourage multi-disciplinary expression and collaboration with other community sectors, such as environmental and heritage groups.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The minimum funding request and grant is $300; the maximum is $1,500.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applications are accepted from Sullivan County nonprofit art and cultural groups such as literary groups, music groups, dance groups, theater groups, historical societies, museums, libraries, folklore groups, and so on. Individual artists and organizations without nonprofit status may apply if they have a nonprofit organization acting as a fiscal sponsor.

Organizations may apply if they:
- Are based in Sullivan County and have a Board of Directors or volunteers who perform board functions.
- Have been in existence for at least one year.
- Are not receiving direct county funding in the 2020 budget.

Organizations must provide evidence of nonprofit status with one of the following documents:
-An IRS letter of Determination
-A charter issued by the Board of Regents of NY State
-An authorization as an arm of local government or
-A receipt of registration from the New York State Office of the Attorney General’s Charities Bureau.

Groups or organizations who cannot be funded include:
-State agencies
-Public schools
-Individuals, without
-Organizations already receiving line item funding from the county

Not Funded: Capital expenditures; scholarships; fellowships; school activities and programs; equipment purchases; arts programs that are rehabilitative or therapeutic; prizes; entertainment costs for receptions or fund raising benefits; projects which are not open to the general public; requests which are larger than the deficit shown in your budget (total expenses minus total income); operating expenses of privately owned facilities (studios, etc.); past debts; non-incorporated chapters of organizations not located in Sullivan County.
